OVERVIEW

The Cambridge Diet was created in the 1970′s, when Dr. Alan Howard, Ph.D., from Cambridge University in England decided to delve into the research and treatment of obesity. His goal was to design a diet that would give someone all of the daily nutrients needed for survival, and require the least amount of caloric intake daily. He worked with a team of nutritionists, including Dr. Dennis Jones. Dr Jones was a key player on the research plan, and launched an actual product available to the public in 1973. In 1979, with improved taste, it became the Cambridge Diet.

HOW IT WORKS

The Cambridge Diet is a liquid diet, although the program has expanded so that you can now purchase snack bars, soups and “super oats” as well. Following the Cambridge Diet consists of drinking 3 Signature drink formula servings per day with or without food, depending on which program you are following. Programs vary, depending on your weight and how much weight loss is needed. The Cambridge Signature Diet drink consists of protein, carbohydrates, fiber, fat and the daily percent of vitamins and minerals your body needs. There are 2 different Cambridge Diet formulas. The Original 330 product formula contains 75% of your daily value of protein. The 420 Food For Life product formula contains 100% of your daily value of protein.

The diet has 4 different programs that can be followed. The Fast Track Program is to consume 3-4 Cambridge Diet liquid drinks per day with no additional food. The Alternate Program recommends 3-4 Cambridge Diet liquid drinks one day, and 3 Cambridge Diet liquid drinks the following day in addition to one low fat, low calorie meal. Total calories for the day should be 400-800 calories. This plan is alternated back and forth until the desired result is achieved. The Regular Plan Program is to consume 3 servings of Cambridge Diet liquid drinks before each low fat, low calorie meal per day. Calories should not exceed 800 for the day. The Regular Plan 2 Program consists of consuming 3 servings of Cambridge Diet liquid drinks per day, and only one meal of low fat, low calorie food each day. Calories on this plan should also not exceed 800 for the entire day. The Cambridge Diet is also considered safe for those who are diabetic, and anyone who may have high blood pressure.

The Special K diet was created by the makers of the Special K product line.

Apple cider vinegar has been consumed for thousands of years for its taste as well as its purported health benefits. The ancient Egyptians and the Chinese all mention apple cider vinegar as a health aid in their ancient texts. They believed that it was the fermentation process that bestowed the apple cider with its health producing properties. The apple cider vinegar diet as we know it was developed by Dr. J. C. Jarvis in his book “Folk Medicine” published in 1958 by The Fawcett World Library.

The diet does not advocate making any dietary modifications and it does not make recommendations for an exercise regimen. The benefit of the apple cider vinegar diet derives solely from drinking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar 15 minutes prior to every meal. If you have problems with the taste, the vinegar may be diluted in a glass of water prior to drinking. Eating a reasonable diet and adding some daily exercise will help to accelerate the weight loss benefits of this diet.

HOW IT WORKS

The apple cider vinegar diet works by curbing appetite. The fiber in the vinegar can lead to feeling full sooner then you normally would. This helps you decrease your caloric intake per meal. The apple cider vinegar diet also works by increasing the body’s ability to burn fat. This is accomplished by the pectin in the apple cider vinegar which replenishes the good bacteria in your intestines thus aiding the elimination of toxins from your body. Apple cider vinegar is also known to regulate blood sugar levels, stop the craving for sugar and reduce the cholesterol in your blood.

Apple cider vinegar also has many essential vitamins, minerals and amino acids that your body needs for proper functioning. The acetic acid in the vinegar helps your body metabolize proteins and fats while aiding in the absorption of vital nutrients.

CONCLUSION

Although apple cider vinegar taken in small doses, some caution needs to be taken before starting this diet. Since apple cider vinegar is very acidic it can irritate the inside of your mouth and throat. It can also interfere with certain medications. Prolonged and heavy use of apple cider vinegar can result in low blood potassium and has shown to have an adverse effect on bone density. Screening by your primary care provider is advised before starting this diet.

Dieting seems to be one constant fad which never goes out of style. There are so many to choose from how can anyone know which is better? Many people watch for the expert claims or the celebrity success stories before choosing. We also want convenience and fast results; the easier the better. The 3 day diet offers that option. It states in just 3 days one can lose 10 pounds.

One form of the diet was called the University of Oregon Medical School Diet and it has been circulating since 1975 but WebMD says it dates back to 1985. The funny thing is no one really accepts responsibility for this diet or do they want to answer for any criticisms arising from it. This could be because many individuals criticize forms of dieting not requiring exercise. Most of us know exercise is a necessary part to any weight loss regiment but when we are looking for a ‘quick fix,’ we still hold out for the easiest option.

HOW IT WORKS
The 3 day diet is an easy option if one has self control. This diet essentially does result in 10 pounds of weight loss but it is mostly water/liquid loss rather than fat. One has to eat portions exactly as specified and cannot over eat. This diet is a menu of meals to follow. They are very low fat, low carbohydrate meals. The dieter is not starving themselves but they are limited. For instance one dinner is 3 ounces of any lean meat or chicken, 1 cup of green beans, 1 cup carrot, 1 apple, and 1 cup regular vanilla ice cream. Few condiments are allowed. In addition to the meals, the dieter should drink 4 cups of water or non-caloric drinks daily. This seems easy enough but as stated earlier, without exercise, most people gain the weight right back.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, if a person needs to drop some weight quickly, this could be the way to go. If they are looking for something ever lasting, they must acknowledge exercise is a definite need to keep the pounds away. This diet does state one can do the diet, eat regular for 4-5 days and then do the diet again, but if you are gaining it back it may not be the best option to choose. This could be the perfect diet to kick start one’s confidence, though.

The cabbage soup diet is a weight loss diet that is based around eating low calorie cabbage soup over a period of seven days. This particular type of dieting became very popular during the 1980′s. This diet can result in a weight loss of up to ten pounds during the seven day consumption period. There is a specific outline of the diet and what exactly to eat for each of the seven days. It is not recommended for this diet to continue more than seven consecutive days and you should give at least a two week break in between cabbage soup diet cycles. It has become an extremely popular diet for short term weight loss because it does not require any type of long term commitment.

HOW IT WORKS

The outline of what you should specifically eat each day is very desirable.
Day 1: On day one you can enjoy any kind and as much fruit as you want except for bananas. You should only drink unsweetened teas, cranberry juice or water. Make sure to only eat your cabbage soup and drink these drinks on day one.
Day 2: Day two is vegetable day. Consume as many fresh vegetables, raw or cooked, as you can. Leafy green vegetables are best. Avoid peas, corn and dry beans. Eat as many vegetables as you want with your soup. For dinner on you enjoy a large baked potato with butter. Do not eat any fruit on day two.
Day 3: Day three is a mixture of day one and day two. Eat all the fruits and vegetables you want along with your soup. Do not eat a baked potato today.
Day 4: Day four is skim milk and bananas day. Indulge in as many as eight bananas throughout the day. Also drink as much skim milk as you can.
Day 5: Day six is known as tomatoes and beef day. You should eat as many as six fresh and whole tomatoes and between ten and twenty ounces of beef. Day five’s purpose is to wash the uric acid out of your body so you must drink at least 6-8 glasses of water during the day. Make sure to eat your cabbage soup at least once this day. You can also substitute no skin chicken or broiled fish for the beef.
Day 6: Eat your soup at least one time today. Consume as much beef and vegetables as you can.
Day 7: Eat the soup at least once and brown rice. Drink unsweetened fruit juice only.

CONCLUSION

Although this diet ended in some arguments among people as to whether or not this is a healthy and balanced way of eating plan, many people continue to give the diet a try and discover they really enjoy it and will attest to its usefulness. The Clothes Soups Diet plan offers quick weight loss, but it’s totally with a lack of nutrition, taste and variety.

The Alternate day diet is a twist on the traditional diet that most people know. Dr. James B. Johnson is the originator of the diet. Through studies with mice, Dr. Johnson realized that having a high calorie day on one day and a low calorie day on another was successful. The mice in the study seemed to lose weight and be over all healthier than their counterparts. The mice that were on the alternate day diet did not show signs of aging as quickly.

HOW IT WORKS

The idea of the alternate day diet is very simple. The dieter alternates the caloric intake every other day. Sometimes it is also referred to the up day down day diet. The calorie intake is adjusted to keep your body confused such as a feast and famine diet. Dr. Johnson suggests that the dieter use meal replacement shakes on the down days to control the calorie intake. On the down days, the dieter is tapping into the stores that the body has stored away as fat. The down days also can lead to energy drain and hunger. However the benefits of the diet outweigh the hunger associated with it. There are theories that state that the energy drop is because your body is ridding itself of toxins during this time.

The up days of the diet does not have any restrictions. The dieter is encouraged to eat whatever they want without binging. Having the up days in the diet will allow the body to realize that it is not in a complete famine and not to store fat. The variation of the up days and down days allow the dieter to have whatever food they wish without feeling deprived in any way. Studies have been shown that this is a very successful way for long term weight loss.

CONCLUSION

The Alternate day diet is a creative way for dieters to have variation in their lives. Dieters often feel deprived on traditional calorie restrictive diets. The long term deprivation of favorite foods will often time end up being a slip up down the road. The Alternate day diet takes the deprivation out of the equation, thus allowing longer term success. The combination of high and low calorie days balances out to the same amount of calories as a traditional calorie restriction. The diet also allows the body to de toxify on the down days. There have been numerous studies showing the positive effects of ridding the body of toxins.

The banana diet was started in Japan by Hitoshi Watanabe in March of 2008. From there news about the diet and its associated weight loss spread rapidly through social media sites, blogs, and simple word of mouth. This plan is meant for dieters that are only looking to lose a moderate amount of weight, fifty pounds being the maximum goal of weight loss. Dieters who are more than fifty pounds away from their goal weight should try something with a more agressive structure before going on the banana diet.

HOW IT WORKS

The banana diet is very simple and easy to follow. It provides a simple alternative to the millions of regimented diets on the market these days. There are very few rules to follow, making it a very attractive diet. When following the banana diet, the person is to eat bananas for breakfast along with room temperature water. Throughout the rest of the day they are allowed to eat whatever foods they prefer aside from dairy products and alcohol, and are limited to drinking only room temperature water with their meals. They are expected to follow a Japanese tradition of eating which is that they go through their day at a constant 80% degree of fullness. Dieters are not to eat after 8 pm, and are expected to be in bed by midnight.

This diet is based off of some very basic dieting rules. Bananas are known to improve digestion and boost metabolism. A higher metabolism means that a persons body is burning through calories at a higher rate than normal, allowing them to eat more food without gaining as much weight. Drinking water with meals means that the person will feel fuller before they eat. It suppress their appetite so that they don’t eat as many calorie filled foods.

The final rule is that dieters be in bed by midnight every night they are on the diet. This is related to a link between lack of sleep and obesity. People who receive few hours of sleep each night are found to eat more during their day than people who get at least 6-8 hours of sleep per night.

CONCLUSION

Overall, the banana diet is one that is relatively easy to follow. It attracts dieters because of it’s lack of structure. With less rules to adhere to, dieters feel more in control of their weight loss while unknowingly taking advantage of some very basic health rules. This diet is intended for more casual dieters who want to lose from ten to fifty pounds.

You Are What You Eat began as a television show in the United Kingdom developed and presented by Gillian McKeith. After the success of the show, McKeith published a book by the same name. More than just a diet, the Gillian McKeith Plan, as it is also known, recommends daily exercise and meditation, use of supplements and teas, and detoxification in the form of colonics and avoiding processed sugar, caffeine, and alcohol. The plan is designed to help people not only lose weight but correct vitamin or mineral imbalances, improve digestion, treat hormonal and immune disorders, and increase energy.

HOW IT WORKS

You Are What You Eat is not an instant weight loss diet but a long-term commitment to a healthier lifestyle. The plan takes a holistic approach to eating, and the book includes information on what foods to eat and how to combine them at meals for optimal digestion. There are no specific weight loss guidelines because participants can choose which parts of the plan to incorporate into their lives. The plan promises that health benefits will follow the prescribed changes in diet, but results will vary with each person.

McKeith presents a list of 100 foods to eat in abundance, such as fruits and vegetables, grains, juices, soy, sprouts, and fresh fish, and she advocates three small meals plus three snacks a day. A sample of a day’s menu would be fruit for breakfast, a salad with nuts for lunch, and either fish and salad or grains and vegetables for dinner. Snacks might be raw veggies or juice, nuts, or a fruit smoothie. Foods to avoid include the obvious: alcohol, processed sugar, artificial sweeteners, and refined grains, but also plants in the nightshade family, which includes tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and potatoes.

McKeith’s theory of food combining explains that if foods are eaten in the order it takes to digest (slower-digesting foods first), the result is less gas, discomfort, and constipation. Fruit should be eaten alone, and beverages are to be saved until the end of the meal. A detailed chart illustrating food combinations is included.

CONCLUSION

This is a vegetarian-friendly diet, but it does not strictly exclude meat or dairy. Incorporating more raw foods into your diet is recommended, although this is not an exclusively raw food plan, either. Owning a juicer and a blender will be helpful as the menus contain fresh juice and smoothies. The book also includes seven days of menus, recipes, remedies for common ailments, skin care regimens, and a list of foods to enhance libido.

The British heart foundation diet starts with a 200 calorie breakfast, consisting of a slice of cheddar cheese, an apple, and five crackers. Water, plain tea, or unsweetened black coffee may be consumed with breakfast. Lunch will consist of one boiled egg and a slice of plain bread providing 150 calories. Beverage options are the same as breakfast beverages. Dinner includes 1 cup of tuna, 1/2 cup of melon, 1 cup of cauliflower, 1 cup of beetroot, and 1/2 cup of low fat vanilla ice cream. The same beverages for breakfast and lunch are optional. You dinner will provide you with 250 calories.

This low calorie diet provides approximately 600 calories a day and should be monitored under the supervision of a physician. Many claim that the British heart foundation diet is not a healthy choice, but there are some who actually like the diet plan. The three day plan promises you’ll lose 3 pounds in 10 days and it delivers. The diet should not be used for any longer than 3 days because of the limited amounts of food you consume. Using the diet plan in intervals is not so bad. After the body gets use to the diet, the body will adjust leaving less side effects.
